1810-20 Romantic Grandfather Longcase Clock Painted (£1,100)
This lovely 8 day longcase clock stands 2 metres and 20cm / or about 7 foot two and a half inches tall.
The late Georgian oak and mahogany case has attractive swan neck features to the hood, with a central metal plate showing an eagle. There are lovely turned columns on either side of the face and some marguetry showing off the lovely grain of the oak and mahogany.
The case opens with a key to reveal lead weights and pendulum, and there is a lozenge inlay on the door.
The pedestal has an antique split to the wood, which is a wonderful sign of this lovely clock's age.
The dial is painted with a beautiful scene of a fisherman by a lakeside cottage, with hills across the water in the distance. There are images of ruined abbeys / castles in the corners of the dial, which would have been fashionable during the Romantic era. This clock really makes me think of the Romantic poetry of Wordsworth!
The 8 day movement has been serviced by a professional clockmaker in the last month, with new bearings throughout. It runs extremely smoothly and keeps excellent time. The strike is a simple, delicate chime which tolls the hours.
This is an unspoiled original item, in very nice condition. The movement and case are in their original pairings. An excellent country clock that will look magnificent in that special room in the house. Great!
